As per Hindu Vedic calendar, Durgashtami fast is observed every month during Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha. Mahashtami is the most significant Durgashtami which falls in the month of Ashwin during nine days of Shardiya Navratri festivities. Goddess Durga is the divine universal mother and she is the power behind all creation, protection and destruction. Maa Durga or Goddess Durga was formed by combining the forces of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma to defeat demon Mahishasura. संस्कृत में दुर्गा नाम का अर्थ अजेय है। She is worshipped for success, courage and prosperity and symbolises strength, morality and protection.

Basically, goddess Durga is the protector of morality and destroyer of sin. She is known as the Mother of the Cosmos with infinite power to protect devotees from all kinds of ruinous powers. Maa Durga is also known as Sati, Gauri, Amba, Ambika, Parvati, Shakti, Bhavani, Bhadrakali and Kalika. She symbolises Mahamaya where Maha means Great and Maya means illusion.
