Raktabeej means a seed derived from blood i.e. a new organism born from blood. Raktbeej was a demon. There was a fight between Raktabeej and Mahakali in which Mother Parvati killed Raktabeej by taking the form of Mahakali.The demon Raktabeej was extremely powerful. Even all the gods together could not kill him. Actually, Raktabeej had a boon from Shiva that wherever the drops of his blood would fall, another Raktabeej-like monster would be born from there. In such a situation, whenever a deity was attacking Raktabeej at the time of war with the gods and a drop of his blood was falling down, another Raktabeej was being produced from there. This was the reason that no deity was able to defeat him.To deal with this problem, all the deities urged Goddess Durga to fight with Raktbeej. Mother listened to his prayer and fought with him. When the mother was fighting with him, whenever the mother was cutting off the parts of Raktabeej, a new monster was being born from her. Then the mother ordered Goddess Chandika that whenever she attacked this demon, Chandika should drink her blood.Chandika Maa did the same and started drinking the fallen blood of the demon. From this a new monster was not being born. Chandika widened her mouth. He swallowed many demons and thats how Maa Durga killed Raktabeej.
