The Mahamrityunjayaa mantra was founded by Sage Markandeya. Once sage Mrikandu and Marudmati, his wife took a long penance in the desire of a son. Lord Shiva was impressed with their devotion and he gave them a choice an intelligent son with a short life or a low intelligence son with a long life. Mrikandu rishi accepted an intelligent son but with a lifespan of only 16 years. When the son was about to the age of 16, his parents sage Mrikandu and Marudmati started becoming depressed. Markandeya couldnt understand their pain. On his insistence, the two narrated the entire incident. Markandeya then started his own penance to Shivalinga. When on Markandeyas 16th birthday Lord Yamas messenger came to the earth to take him, they found too absorbed in prayers and couldnt complete the act. After that Lord Yama came to take him away. But the kid remained stubborn and wrapped his arms around the Shivalinga and surrendered himself to the mercy of Lord Shiva. Yama decided to take the child away removed his noose, this made Shiva so angry. Then he appeared out of the Ling and killed the Yama. However, killing the Yama could disturb the universe, so Shiva revived Yama into life with the condition that the kid would remain 16 years for time immemorial and will remain alive forever. Therefore Lord Shiva is also called Kalantaka - The End of Death at times.
