Shani Jayanti also known as Shanishchara Jayanti and Sani Jayanthi is marked as the birth anniversary of Lord Shani. Lord Shani is the son of Vivasvan or Surya (the Sun god). He is the ruling deity of Planet Saturn and the sixth day of the week is also named after the Lord Shani & Planet Saturn as Shanivar or Saturday. As per astronomers Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar system and as is the sixth planet, as per distance from the Sun. On the auspicious occasion of Shani Jayanti or Shani Amavasya one should worship Shani Dev for his blessings. This festival is celebrated on Amavasya during Jyeshtha month (June-July) according to the North Indian calendar and during Vaishakha (May-June) month in the South.
All About Lord Shani
As per puranas, Lord Shani is a Vedic deity of Justice who gives the results based on karma, based on words, thoughts and deeds of an individual. Basically, he serves the positive outcome for positive karma and negative outcome for negative karma. Usually Lord Shani is seen in the images sitting on his vahana (vehicle) Crow, with a scepter known as Danda or sword in his hand. Worshipping Lord Shani brings discipline in the life of an individual. He stands for hard work, of old age, of penance and also makes an individual abstain from pleasures of life to attain spiritual growth or goal. He can also make his devotees ascetic.
Shani Dev is the son of Lord Surya or Sun God. His wife is Goddess Manda. He teaches lessons of life to the people in a hard way and is quite feared by most. It is believed that Lord Shani can be a friend if one abides by his rules of Karma. As per the Vedic astrology, if Saturn pierces and passes through the constellation of Rohini then it is considered to be very inauspicious and causes troubles in the life of an individual. He is also known as the lord of punishment and justice.
